Solution Project 2: Health and well-being of marginalized communities.
About the project
Before identifying relevant projects as part of the initiatives toward capacity building and intervention through sustainable solution projects in the Pensiangan Parliamentary Constituency (P182), the researchers conducted pilot visits and exploratory research in February 2020. Meetings and discussion with communities and stakeholders helped identified several pertinent issues and shortcomings. The SAWO solution project was delivered to address the needs for access to information related to health and well-being of marginalised communities in five villages in the Pensiangan constituency. With the collaboration of key local community leaders, a wide cross section of the local population were mobilised to participate in these half-day workshops in several villages which include input on SDGs, health and gender equality (SDG 3 & 5). The participants showed much interest in the SDGs, with women voicing concern on social issues, such as domestic violence and child marriage as well as the lack of health facilities, while the men were focused on infrastructure and economy. The youths felt side-lined by the village and community leaders who are from the older generation and often do not include them in discussions and decision making. Majority of participants said the workshops helped them to understand the country’s development goals and how they can play a role in achieving them at the local level. Women participants were incredibly appreciative of the opportunity to participate in discussions and had their voices heard which is usually not common in their male-dominated culture.
