BHTM students apply UCSF’s Green Concept and Philosophy during their internship with WWF Malaysia

Two Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management (BHTM students) became the first Tourism interns to work with WWF Malaysia when they were attached with the Kudat Field Office of UCSF last year.

One of the remits of WWF is focusing on reducing the footprint of the tourism sector on marine and coastal habitats, and biodiversity by promoting the adequate use of marine and coastal resources and increased marine protected areas, while creating economic benefits for local communities. The students were placed under the Marine Program and CEE (Community Engagement and Education) throughout their internship. Despite trying conditions, which included the first MCO due to the Covid-19 pandemic which forced the students to work from home in completing their assignment, the students managed to deliver their final report to WWF. Their tasks encompassed research on TMP (Tun Mustapha Park) tourism development, developing tourism packages together with local community based on SWOT, and research on stakeholder’s perception of sustainable tourism which later became the first draft report about sustainable tourism in TMP.

The students conducted their research through interviews and surveys as well as helping to design promotion material for local products.
