Traditional Motifs and Patterns: Functions and Meanings in the Lives of Murut Tahol Community in Kampung Alutok, Ulu Tomani, Tenom
Murut Tahol is the largest sub-ethnic of Murut ethnic groups. This community inhabits South Sabah’s countryside highlands covering Tomani, Rundum, Pensiangan, Tenom, Sepulut and Pensiangan areas.
The artistic heritage of weaving based on the forest resources by the Murut Tahol community is still preserved till now. The motifs and patterns created on the traditional wicker surface of this community contain the functions and meaning of the social world in their lives.
The aims of the research:
- To examines the identity of Murut Tahol’s heritage arts through motives and pattern in traditional crafts.
- Analyse the values and meaning of the pattern produced as well as its relationship with the life and the world view of the Murut Tahol community.
- Categorizes the craft patterns produced on the basis of the principles of indigenous art.
