Rural Livelihood and Sustainability Among Highland Communities at Kg. Mesilou 22nd February 2019
About the research
Agriculture and tourism are the main economic resources of the communities in Kundasang, an area located within the Ranau, district. Located in the highlands of the highest mountain area in Southeast Asia with a height of 4000 feet above sea level makes Kundasang not only rich in nature but known to be culturally unique. With only about 15 km from the Ranau urban area, Kundasang and its surrounding area have rapidly developed especially with the tourism sector with eco-tourism products, agro-tourism and culture which is now booming. Kampung Mesilou, Kundasang is the study area chosen due to its myriad of characteristics suitable to conduct a study to look into some social issues pertaining to change and traditions, i.e. subsistence and market-led economy, non-farm activities such as community based-tourism, women and highland farming, rural entrepreneurial, rural social organisation etc. which are in the scope of rural sociology field study.
