The pace of change is accelerating. It is a challenge to keep up this change and uncertainty. At UCSF, we take cognizance of this scenario. The students are taught to embrace this reality. As such they are encouraged to question the norms, think outside the box and create relevant concepts, principles and solutions.

We live in a technologically driven world today. And technology is driving this disruptive change. Thus we also equip our students with strong technological knowledge. The classroom learning experience are tailored to be realistic such that the students are in essence building real applicable systems or solving real-world problems.

The 21^st century is a different kind of world. It calls beyond today’s emphasis for single discipline expertise. Students are expected to solve real world problems. Thus they need to be broad-based and inter-disciplinary in nature. For example, our science students are exposed to economics and multi-culturism, making them more entrepreneurial and their solutions more society relevant.

The challenges faced by the world today are more complex and more integrative in nature. Our education have not been effective to realize altruistic citizens. We hope the embodiment of our green concept and philosophy in our education framework and platform, and the ecosyatem we build at UCSF will be more effective, not only in its mission to build an eco-centric green university, but more importantly produce a more wholesome being, who strives for societal wellbeing and environmental sustainability; placing these above (or at least balanced with) personal and material success.

 

UCSF aspires to be a model living green university founded on sound knowledge and education. To achieve this it will commit to a path of continuous learning experience, conducting research, generating and disseminating new knowledge to all stakeholders. It will remain dynamic, contemporary and relevant.

The design thinking framework is designed to inculcate strong planning and analytical skills. It is the basic precursor of problem solving. Modern active learning pedagogy such as Problem-Based Learning (PBL), Project Based Learning (PrBL) and technology-assisted

learnings are adopted widely within our classrooms to ensure that our students can be problem solvers, who are adaptable and dynamic.

The active learning approach is strengthened by the presence of real world problems in our classrooms. Our strong engagement with the industries allow our staff and students to work hand-in-hand with industry players, solving real-world or industrial-related problems. By
engaging first-hand with real problems our students learn to communicate and articulate their ideas. This will make them better prepared to adapt to different scenarios and environments, thereby, more suited in overcoming the so called cultural shocks when graduates enter the job market as professionals.

UCSF strives to be a living learning ecosystem. It’s living labs are meant for a more effective education experience to understand the natural ecosystem and environment-social interactions. Further, it is by itself a living experimental platform through its start-up management style, commercialisation activities, partnership approach (related to shared
community development) and its venture to create itself into a social enterprise. It is a green living university guided by an eco-centric worldview.

The turn of the 21^st century is regarded as the dawn of the gig economy and the rise of AI (Artificial Intelligence). Today, we see the world getting smaller. We are hyper connected digitally (cyberspace). The cyberspace has created a new form of economy which is limitless, opening up greater opportunities to all walks of life. We hope our students will savour this new world by being more enterprising in their endeavour.

An added advantage is our students are also exposed to design thinking, irrespective of their foundation or discipline of study. Design thinking is part of innovative thinking skills. Like all knowledge building process, we equip our students with the basic underlying principles of a discipline before introducing them to systems and processes. The solutions generate are more holistic.
